Lichtbende & Messiaen - Magic Lanterns & Organ
Lichtbende shows a unique story of creation. An exciting interplay of projections with music by Messiaen. Ten old magic lanterns project magical images on a canvas of 20 by 4 meters that take you back to the origin of humanity. Each piece of music symbolizes one day from the “seven-day” creation. Each day a different technique is used to depict the story; from the Japanese Utsushi-e to the Turkish Ebru technique, from mechanically driven images in magic lanterns to manually played slide projectors. The images are made with a disarming desire to discover from everyday materials such as buttons, beads, caps and plastics. The audience sees how the players make the projections on the spot between the impressive arrangement of projectors and mechanisms.
SEVEN DAYS was commissioned by ORGELPARK Amsterdam and first performed there on 28 February 2015. The performance was performed there again on 29 and 30 January 2016.
